A Checklist for Making Faster, Better, Major Decisions
Eric Lawson - Harvard Business Review
People who have made decisions using best practices achieved their expected results 90% of the time, and 40% of them exceeded expectations. (For comparison, goal-setting best practices helped managers achieve expected results only 30% of the time.) Other studies have shown that effective decision-making practices increase the number of good decisions sixfold and cut failure rates nearly in half.
(1) Write down five preexisting goals or priorities that will be impacted by the decision.
(2) Write down at least three, but ideally four or more, realistic alternatives.
(3) Write down the most important information you are missing.
(4) Write down the impact your decision will have one year in the future.
(5) If your decision is a major decision, seek feedback from a minimum of two but not more than six trusted advisors.
(6) Write down what was decided, as well as why. Writing these things down increases commitment and establishes a basis to measure the results of the decision.
(7) Do a post-mortem follow-up in one to two months to see if adjustments need to be made.
Research has found that people who regularly follow the seven steps above save time, make decisions faster, and improve the outcomes of their decisions by 20%.
