A weeks ago we were fortunate to have legendary sales trainer and author Ben Gay III on our monthly group coaching call for many of our top clients. I think it’s definitely worth noting the credentials he brings. Ben is a legend in the world of professional selling who’s written over 20-books which have sold millions of copies and has also worked up close or hired the best sales and motivational minds over the last 50-years to help him including, Zig Ziglar, Napoleon Hill, and Earl Nightingale. Let that sink in for a moment. Those three men have easily influenced hundreds of millions of people through their books and teachings when they were still living.
Back to Ben and why we brought him on our call as a guest expert. Something I’ve noticed that many of our clients are challenged with is consistency and systems for key areas within their business. This gets even trickier when multiple employees are also trying to work with current and prospective customers in such areas ranging from sales to product/service delivery. We brought in Ben’s expert wisdom to help address this ongoing challenge by exploring the strategy of using |

scripts. Scripts are effective as they help train people on proven ways to handle situations and events with greater confidence and order. While most people initially frown on the term scripting, their application once fully understood and implemented, allow for many benefits including:
Here are three key lessons from the legendary sales trainer and bestselling author Ben Gay III from our group call:
- Time savings for employees and customers
- Allow for existing and new employees to get on the same page
- A consistent way to respond to key questions
- Proper way to insure that key functions within a business are handled in a timely fashion
Here are three key lessons from the legendary sales trainer and bestselling author Ben Gay III from our group call:
Three Key Scripting Lessons from Ben Gay III
#1: Scripts work. If you don’t have consistent ways to deal with certain core business functions errors will happen and customers will get upset. You need a plan or else you’re planning to fail. “Winging it” is not a smart strategy when trying to build a growing business. Systems and scripts are a must. Scripts are used all the time and most notably within the hospitality and travel industries. Next time you call to make a hotel reservation or book a flight pay close attention to the scripted process of how you are handled and treated.
#2: Top sales people are great listeners. Ben mentioned that many of the top sales closers he has worked with did very little talking and lots of listening. He referenced the late, great leader, Nelson Mandela who stated:
“As a leader... I have always endeavored to listen to what each and every person in a discussion had to say before venturing my own opinion. Oftentimes, my own opinion will simply represent a consensus of what I heard in the discussion. I always remember the axiom: a leader is like a shepherd. He stays behind the flock, letting the most nimble go out ahead, whereupon the others follow, not realizing that all along they are being directed from behind.”
#3: Language is everything. Great sales people paint visual pictures and show the prospect multiple positive outcomes by working together. They also are very good at employing inclusive language such as “we” to show that the transaction is a team effort.
One of the most important areas in all of selling is the logical conclusion in the sales process or asking for the business. Most people mess this one up and it costs businesses and non-profits millions of dollars per day. For example: a great trial close and the proper language employed at the end of a presentation is essential. Here’s a brilliant example of the power of words and also a short script that he shared:
“Based on everything we’ve discussed today, I recommend WE _____(Go with this option, start with this, etc.). Is that fair enough?”
