Emotional Thinking vs Logical Thinking
Picture
Jim Vaughan
(Jim Vaughan) Some things in life, I'll never figure out. I know a man who is doing time in a New York prison for petty crimes in that state. Before he went to New York, he committed petty crimes in Florida. The day he's released from the New York prison system the Florida courts want him back to sentence him to prison in Florida.  In trying to help this guy put his life back together, I've learned he doesn't think logically. He talks about his future actions based almost exclusively on emotions. One of my rules is, "To the degree you are logical, you are not emotional. To the degree you are emotional, you are not logical." It is my belief that if prisoners could re-live 15 minutes of their lives, more than half of them wouldn't be in prison. Sometimes in anger, people say things or do things to a spouse, a child, someone you work with, a total stranger standing line at McDonalds, or another car in traffic. When your anger levels get back to normal, and the reality sets in... you realize, your life is never going to be the same again. Thought for today... make sure your brain is in gear before you put your mouth in motion.

High Performance Requires a Team
Picture
(MindingWhatMatters.Wordpress.org)  My (late) father gave one of his superintendents some advice about relationships early in his career. It was something he never forgot in working over 20 years of construction and he shared this advice with us at my father’s service last year.  It all came about when this young superintendent went to my Dad to complain about the Foreman of the job site.  Dad admitted to knowing how difficult the foreman was to work with. He said, “Relationships are the hardest part of your job. You could complain about those who are hard to get along with or you could try to appreciate each worker for what he or she uniquely contributes to this job.” That piece advice transformed the way the superintendent saw his relationships and his ability to lead the construction project. Mindful Eating - Key to a Healthier Body
Picture
(PeakPerformancePsychology.Wordpress.com)   Mindless eating occurs when we lose connection with our food.  We eat without awareness of the flavor, we rush and eat more than we need, and we don’t enjoy our food as much as we could. Mindless eating makes it difficult to recognize the difference between hungry and non hungry eating,  Mindfulness also allows us to be aware of why we are eating: are we hungry, tired, bored, excited or all of the above?! In contrast, mindful eating occurs when we pay attention to the eating experience.  Considerable research has emerged supporting the importance of  mindfulness in the enjoyment of food, portion control and subsequent weight control. 7 Microsoft Outlook Time Management Tips
Picture
(cricpa.com)  There is truth in the cliché statement “time is money.” Our clients often seem to ask us the same question that Tom Cruise, as the character of Jerry Maguire, famously shouted: “Show me the money!” So let’s discuss the topic of effective time management, which has been covered in dozens of widely purchased books and hundreds of well-attended seminars. Why? It is human nature to use time inefficiently and ineffectively due to distractions and needed periodic breaks. Therefore, many of us might benefit from an effective time management system that fits our personality and lifestyle. While no single system works with the same efficiency and effectiveness for everybody, one key to an effective system is its handiness when you are notified of action or follow-up items. Therefore, for work time management, Outlook is usually a best practice solution.  (Learn More)

Spirituality

Picture
(University of Maryland Medical Center)  What is spirituality? Spirituality has been defined in numerous ways. These include: a belief in a power operating in the universe that is greater than oneself, a sense of interconnectedness with all living creatures, and an awareness of the purpose and meaning of life and the development of personal, absolute values. It's the way you find meaning, hope, comfort, and inner peace in your life. Although spirituality is often associated with religious life, many believe that personal spirituality can be developed outside of religion. Acts of compassion and selflessness, altruism, and the experience of inner peace are all characteristics of spirituality. Many Americans are becoming interested in the role of spirituality in their health and health care. This may be because of dissatisfaction with the impersonal nature of our current medical system, and the realization that medical science does not have answers to every question about health and wellness. What is the history of spirituality and health care? In most healing traditions and through generations of healers in the early beginnings of Western medicine, concerns of the body and spirit were intertwined. But with the coming of the scientific revolution and the enlightenment, these considerations were removed from the medical system. Today, however, a growing number of studies reveal that spirituality may play a bigger role in the healing process than the medical community previously thought. (Learn More)

Considering Self-Employment?
Picture
(TheSimpleDollar.com)  I’ve been fully self-employed since 2008, starting from a side business that was around in some form since 2004. Over that decade, I’ve learned quite a lot about the financial and practical realities of self-employment. When I first made the leap to full-time self employment, it was scary. It felt like the number of things I needed to do was overwhelming.  What I found over time was that some of the stuff was important – and some of it wasn’t. Here are the six things that I’m really glad I did during the first stages of self-employment. You should do most of these even if you’re self-employed on a part-time basis or in your spare time.
